The client
Akona has secured government funding through the Department for Education. The skills Bootcamp funded provision offers learners—whether employed, self-employed, or unemployed—access to funding that enables upskilling or professional development in railway safety-critical roles, OLE and isolation competencies. The two programmes offered by Akona include a basic OLE course, which provides an introduction to OLE for newcomers to the industry, and an advanced OLE course, which allows the existing workforce to further develop their skills.
Over the last two years, Akona has secured £250k in funding through the Skills Bootcamp courses, achieving strong outcomes for both newcomers to the industry and the existing workforce. This highlights our commitment to enhancing the skills required in the industry.
Liam Kelly, a recent learner on the Skills Bootcamp course stated:
“I recently completed my PTS, OLEC 1, OLEC 2, and Site Warden courses through Akona, and I cannot recommend them enough. Each course was delivered with professionalism, clarity, and an engaging approach that made learning not only easy but also enjoyable.
What truly sets Akona apart is the ongoing support they provide after completing the courses. Since finishing, I’ve had the opportunity to gain practical experience on shift in Durham, working on bonding, and in Northampton as ground support. I was even able to get hands-on experience in the basket, installing SPS and balance weights. The guidance and mentorship I received from experienced linesmen were invaluable; they took the time to explain processes and share their expertise as I demonstrated a keen interest in learning and improving my skills.
For anyone considering a career in the railways, Akona is an exceptional choice. Their comprehensive training, dedicated support, and emphasis on skill development make them a standout provider in this industry.
I will be starting a career with Network Rail very soon.”
